Worked example, method and scope

Worked example — for a 2,000 ft² dwelling with one 12 kW range and a 5,000 VA dryer, 240 V, the engine returns:
78 A at 240 V — 18,625 VA demand

How it works. The standard method totals general lighting at 3 VA per square foot, applies the demand factors to that subtotal, then adds the appliance, range, dryer and HVAC loads under their own separate rules. It takes longer than the optional method and frequently returns a larger service, which is why both methods exist.
